John Shingleton sent me a few photographs and an artist statement:

I have been a keen photographer for over 50 years.Over that time my enthusiasm has waxed and waned but I have been particularly lucky that my work and my leisure travel has taken me all over the world and I have taken tens of thousand of photos from those travels. I have had many photos published and won competitions and even a few useful prizes.

 

 

I had a home darkroom, I have done black and white printing and even dabbled in Cibachrome ( reversal color) printing which was both difficult and expensive and even for reasons which I have long forgotten I home processed color slide film.

Over the years I have shot everything although motor sport and cars have been major subjects due to the fact that I spent my whole working life in the motor industry and I have always had a passion for interesting cars and Porsches in particular.

My early photography was very stilted but that was a product of the times.There was little opportunity to see the work of other photographers other than in magazines and from camera clubs and I have never felt any affinity with camera clubs and their “frogs on logs” photography.

Like other parents my children and now grandchildren feature large in my photography.I have never been into landscapes apart from the early years when I shot a lot of dreary lonely trees and melancholic seascapes.

I do not like “arty farty” photography and much so called modern photography leaves me cold.I have always appreciated the photography of Annie Liebowitz and when the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney had a major exibition of hers a few years ago I loved her signature portraits-quite stunning- but I was completely underwhelmed by her “modern” landscapes.Maybe it's a generational thing.

Sadly as my photography has stretched over such a long period it does not have a consistent uniform style. But I have always disliked using flash and have always preferred what I should call “spontaneous”photography to elaborate lighting and props set ups although that does not stop me liking Annie Liebowitz's work which involve very elaborate props and lighting setups.

In the last 20 years I have done a lot of what now would be called “street photography”.

I see on the web so many photographers nowadays claiming to do”street”. It's everywhere and in my opinion much of it is very mediocre or even worthless. On the other hand there are some photographers such a Thorsten Overgaard who produce really superb”street”.

The problem is that there are so many instant experts around and legions of “snappers” who have no critical faculties to apply to their own photos and who are desperate to be”liked”. And the whole gear issue dominates so much photography discussion.Never mind the photographs, it's “let me tell you about my great new megapixel camera I used to take them”.

As well as the lack of quality of so much photography I am becoming very uneasy about the intrusiveness and lack of respect of much it.I have always tried to engage with the subjects I am shooting -many of my shots are “head-on”and I have usually tried to get their agreement to me shooting them.

This is not always possible but it is an approach I will try to adopt totally in the future.
