Passing By: Lyon Street Photography

French member Alain Licari presented us with his images of men at work in Istanbul, now in his words and street photography here is a city closer to him.

I’ve been living in Lyon for quite a long time, almost my entire life. I was born there actually. Lyon, being the second or third biggest city in France after Paris (the debate is still raging, either you are from Lyon or not!) offers a rich historical, cultural and gastronomical heritage.

The capital of the Gaul, a showplace of the silk industry in the 19th century, the high seat of the Resistance during the Second World War, the homeland of the Lumiere brothers and of Paul Bocuse, Lyon is a vibrant and motley city where it is pleasant to go for a stroll.

From the Croix-Rousse district to the Vieux-Lyon, from the Presqu’île, a peninsula between the Rhone and the Saone rivers via the Guillotière, I like to get lost in the streets and watch time going by. My nose up in the air, my eye looking down the pavement.

I like to get off the beaten track, to break with postcards and preconceived ideas, to go and meet the Lyonnais just the time to take a photo, in order to show their daily life, their diversity, because they are those who primarily give this city its richness.

J’habite Lyon depuis longtemps, depuis presque toujours. J’y suis même né.

Lyon, deux ou troisième ville de France derrière Paris (le débat reste ouvert, que l’on soit Lyonnais ou pas !) offre un riche patrimoine historique, culturel, gastronomique. Capitale des Gaules, haut lieu de l’industrie de la soie au XIXè siècle, siège de la Résistance pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, terre natale de des frères Lumière ou de Paul Bocuse, elle est une cité dynamique et hétéroclite où il fait bon se promener.

Du Quartier de la Croix-Rousse au Vieux-Lyon, de la Presqu’île coincée entre Rhône et Saône en passant par la Guillotière, j’aime me perdre dans ses rues, regarder le temps qui passe. Le nez en l’air, l’œil au ras du pavé.

J’aime sortir des sentiers battus, des cartes postales et des idées reçues pour aller à la rencontre des Lyonnais le temps d’une photo. Montrer leur vie quotidienne, leur diversité car ce sont eux qui avant tout font la richesse de cette ville.
