Revealed: My DIY No subscription Lightroom setup [With sync] [2021]

How do you like paying monthly for the luxury of editing your images? Here’s my no subscription Lightroom setup. If you are like me and want to find a way to edit your images and still have some syncing functionality like Lightroom CC offers, you are in for a treat.

Introduction

Let me first start by saying I love Lightroom. It’s made for photographers. And once you get used to the catalog system it’s pretty darn great. I’ll spare you the spiel, if you clicked on an article entitled “no subscription Lightroom”, it’s because you darn well love it.

But it’s no secret that the love was soured a few years ago when Adobe said they would transition into subscription. And now you are forced to pay for the luxury of editing your images.

But if you loved Lightroom, Adobe’s got us by the balls. Until now.

Why I hate Lightroom

I started to really resent Lightroom when Adobe started to force a subscription on me. I have no problem paying for subscriptions, I gladly pay for Netflix and in fact our street photography magazine IS a subscription, but Netflix and Inspired Eye makes sense because they are continuous and things will be added in the future.

There’s very little reason for Lightroom to be a subscription besides corporate greed.

Let me take that back, there is only good reason for it. And that is syncing. After traveling for about half a decade around the word I started to resent dragging my hard drive everywhere I went.

Once you get into it that syncing feature is awesome, your images are always there.

It’s weird but as the the years go by and computers get more powerful, their capacities dropped. I had a 2TB computer years ago, then I got a 512gb and now this one has 128gb.

The less space on the computer, the less space of images. So having that sync feature is great. While this made Lightroom worth it I really didn’t want to pay Adobe every month because I absolutely hated the fact that my images were tied to a subscription.

If they wanted to they could make it more expensive. And if you stop paying you lose all of your images? Hell no.

I stopped paying for Lightroom CC and tried to figure out a way to have the same functionality without the subscription. Here’s how I did it.

My no subscription Lightroom setup

Now, before I get into what I did, please understand that you will pay some money up front for this. But in the end in about a year it is worth it.

Not only this, there’s a bunch of functions like the search function in Lightroom CC where you would search for “fish” and it would fetch the images related to fish for you. There’s none of that in my setup, it’s a pretty straightforward Lightroom.

Step 1: Get the last Lightroom with freedom built-in

First things first, you will have to get Lightroom 6, the last LR that Adobe offered standalone. And as you guessed, you cannot get it on the official Adobe store. You’ll have to find yourself a code on .

And yes, you guessed it again, this will not be updated anymore as Adobe is all in that Creative Cloud boat. But I hear you ask, what about new cameras and updates? Well I have two things to say:

The updates aren’t much

Companies like Adobe have a vested interest to push out new software but if you look closely at what’s changed, it’s not much. Take photoshop for example, I’ve had 10 years worth of updates, but I can do pretty much all I want to do in Photoshop 7 because it has all the features I will need 99% of the time. Ditto for Lightroom.

Do you really need the latest Lightroom with “updated zoom slider” and “control in naming upgraded catalogs”? Will that make your images leaps and bounds better? Nopes. You really don’t need much at all.

How about the latest cameras?

That’s probably what most astute photographers will ask. If I am stuck with Lightroom 6.14, what if I get a camera that isn’t supported? Well, this will have an extra, but necessary step.

You will need to convert your fancy new camera’s raw files into DNG and then import.

It’s a good policy by default to shoot DNG as you never know what files the computers of the future can’t open. Don’t think that can’t happen, I have some DOS agenda files that can’t be opened without some wizardry.

So if you are willing to go for DNGs before you import into your old Lightroom, you are good to go.

These two requirements are key. You have to be 100% confident that you don’t need the updates (and if you ask me Lightroom’s been the same for years, only with added bells and whistles) and also cool converting your potential future camera’s RAW files into DNG, but it’s something wise to do anyway.

You don’t fancy Lightroom, let’s look at a few alternatives and let’s get into that syncing part.

As a full time dad, husband and photographer, I just didn’t want to learn another piece of software so I am content with Lightroom 6, plus I have presets I gravitate to. But if you are willing there are plenty of alternatives out there that can fit the bill. Some of them proudly say “No subscription”. Amen.

Unlike most, I’m a big fan of PAID software. Because the more money someone gets the more they are motivated for supporting such software. There’s some free alternatives here too but when given the choice I pay.

Luminar 4

This is Lightroom’s most direct new threat. Not a big fan of their sky replacement and all that hoopla but this is great software to organize and edit your images.

One1 Photoraw

Another Lightroom alternative. Never used it buy only heard good things about it.

Exposure x6

This one is pricier than all the above. I’ve used their plugins since their “Alienskin” days on Photoshop. Good times.

Free alternatives

Lightable screenshot

You can also get Rawtherapee and Darktable, both free image editors and managers.

All of the above make worthy Lightroom replacements. If you are wondering which one you should get, Luminar 4. Darktable is pretty much based off Lightroom and probably the easiest to get around because of that. LIGHTtable / DARKroom, get it?Anyway once you have your image editor installed, now it’s time to get the storage set up.

Step2: Get storage with Icedrive

The way I get a no subscription Lightroom setup is with Icedrive…a monthly paid storage service. But, I hear you say, I would still need to pay monthly! This is not a “no subscription Lightroom setup”!

I say to thee NAY! While Icedrive IS a monthly paid subscription service, you can also get a Lifetime deal for it. Simply go to the pricing page and click on the lifetime button to see the prices.

Just to note that Icedrive has been around a while and it never failed me. It’s one of my best purchases of last year. Sorry to sound like a fanboy but I’ve been burned with crappy online drives and I’m really happy I have this. Every few months here and there there’s updates to the software so you know they are kicking butt. Anyway, next step.

Step 3: Set up your drive

Once you changed your password and the drive is yours. Download the mac or windows software. It’s going to ask you what your drive letter will be and simply click mount.

Boom. It’s like you now have an extra 1-2 TB hard drive on your computer, but it’s really online. Here’s what my computer looks like:

I’ve got the main drive, a micro SD card I use as a secondary drive and my Icedrive.

How does it work? It’s like a completely online drive but no program or the computer knows the difference. To the computer this is a real drive.

There’s a buffer on your computer, so when you migrate some files to Icedrive the software will migrate it to a temporary folder on your computer, wait for it to upload and then delete those temporary files. You can always check what’s up in the “transfers” tab.

Step 4: Setting up Lightroom with Icedrive

Now’s the fun part. Lifedrive acts like a real drive on your computer so you can move images and files to and fro. And yes it is recognized by Lightroom.

All my images are on Icedrive

First things first, my Catalog lives on my computer, just makes things easier. All of my images are on Icedrive. I simply migrated every image from my hard drive to Icedrive and clicked on Lightroom “Update folder location” so that it could find my images on the new drive. I recognized all images immediately.

How’s the speed?

When I made this setup I did not make a speed test of how long it takes for Lightroom CC with Adobe sync vs Lightroom 6 with Icedrive. First of all it all depends on your connection. If you have a reasonable connection, expect 12-20 seconds for each image to load. Well that is for 20 megapixel RAW images and only when you click on them to edit as the previews are stored on your computer.

No need to wait to view your catalog as your previews are in the catalog

So for smaller megapixels and JPGs the time is faster, and again it only fetches the original file when you need to edit, as the previews are on the computer.

It might sound sluggish, but again it’s only going to fetch the file when you are actually working on it so it’s not that bad at all.

Better than Lightroom itself

I actually love my system better than Lightroom because there’s no darn syncing involved. In Lightroom there’s your local copy of the image and then there’s the one online, and it’s always syncing. In this case there is no real local copy, it’s pretty seamless. Whatever you edit is almost instantly saved to the online drive directly.

How about mobile?

If you like to edit your images on mobile, there’s a snag. As of writing there is a dedicated app for Icedrive but it cannot be recognized by the system as a drive. So you would have to transfer your files here and there first before editing. I prefer freedom over convenience so I just bunked the whole mobile editing thing.

Step 5: Putting failsafes

In case of emergency, break glass. Here’s how I am putting railguards in place.

Periodically back up to hard drive

I hate having my laptop tethered to my hard drive but I still back up the images there. I’ve never had a problem with Icedrive but just in case, it’s better to have a copy of your images.

Moving away from Lightroom

I don’t see why it would, but in case Lightroom fails I put all images inside Folders and with sidecard XMP files. If I need a temporary fix I can always get Lightroom for a short period of time and transition to something else.

Conclusion

How’s that for my no subscription Lightroom setup? I’m loving it and been “off grid” for about a year. Yes it will cost you money to get Lightroom and Icedrive, but the freedom you feel is pretty awesome.

I really like the fact that I feel in control of my images and don’t need to pay a mega corporation for the privilege of editing my street photography.
